SMILE: A Less Invasive Laser Vision Correction Procedure

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an advanced laser vision correction technique that has gained popularity as a less invasive alternative to traditional LASIK. SMILE is specifically designed to treat nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which requires creating a flap in the cornea, SMILE uses a single, small incision to remove a lenticule (a small piece of tissue) from the cornea, reshaping it to correct the refractive error. This procedure offers many of the benefits of LASIK with fewer potential complications.

The SMILE procedure is performed using a femtosecond laser, which creates a precise, three-dimensional lenticule inside the cornea. A small incision, typically around 2-4mm, is made to remove the lenticule, reshaping the cornea without the need for a flap. This minimally invasive technique reduces the risk of complications such as flap displacement or dry eye, making SMILE an appealing option for those seeking a safer and more efficient treatment.

SMILE has many advantages, including quicker recovery time, less postoperative discomfort, and greater corneal stability compared to traditional LASIK. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, and the risk of complications such as dry eyes is significantly lower. Studies have shown that SMILE results in similar visual outcomes to LASIK, with high patient satisfaction rates and a low rate of complications.

SMILE is suitable for individuals with mild to moderate nearsightedness and astigmatism. However, it is not appropriate for everyone. Your ophthalmologist will evaluate your overall eye health, corneal thickness, and refractive error to determine if SMILE is the best option for you. As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved, but SMILE is considered a safe and effective alternative to LASIK for many individuals seeking freedom from glasses or contact lenses.
